a) The story takes place in America in 1897. That’s the time of the gold rush in North America.
b) The main character lives in the Santa Clara Valley in California. Nowadays it’s known as Silicon Valley. The biggest city in this area is San José. Trough the story he lives is many other places across America.
3. Wat voor soort verhaal is dit ?
a) This story is definitely an adventure story
b) That’s because the main character goes to a lot of different places, makes friends, loses friends and experiences the wild life.
c) I think the story is very realistic, because the main character travels trough nature and it’s all written very believable. The author describes every situation and especially how the main character feels. This story is based on the Golden Rush, and that’s why I believe it could have been happened for real.
4. Personages
a) Buck is the main character in this story. There aren’t any other main characters, just less important characters.
b) Buck is a very sweet dog. His father was a St. Bernard dog and his mother a Scottish Shepherd dog. He’s very proud of the family he lives with: The Millers. They take care of Buck very well, and as thank for that Buck protects the family.
c) John Thornton is the man who buys Buck as a sledge dog. He’s very friendly to Buck and the other dogs. He understands them and gives the dogs rest when they need to. In contrast with other people he doesn’t punish the dogs and that’s why Buck respects John. During the story they get a strong relationship.
5. Samenvatting van het verhaal
Buck lives peacefully with the Miller Family in California. When they go on vacation, the gardener sells Buck to a bad man, called Manuel. He hits Buck several times and he takes him to a cold place. There Buck’s sold to small man, called Perrault. He has to work as a sledge dog, together with seven other dogs. One day he becomes in a fight with the leading dog, and Buck kills him. Now Buck has taken the leading place. Later on he gets sold to another man: John Thornton. During their search for gold, Buck gets new friends and gets the taste of the wild life. He grows very strong and he can feel the wild side inside his body. He loses John Thornton and other friends, he never returns home and he assembles with the wild wolfs. He knows that’s where he belongs.
6. Past de titel bij het verhaal ?
a) I think the title fits perfectly with the story, because during the story you can experience the feelings of Buck. He feels something pulling him to the wild life and deep inside he belongs with the wild wolfs.
b) I wouldn’t have chosen another title, because this is why I’ve chosen this book. The title interested me and made me curious to read the story. It’s a very strong title.
7. Wat vond je van het boek ?
I really liked this book, because it was a very powerful story. Also I love animals and it’s nice to read how dogs experience life. I liked the stunning moments, such as the fights. Those are fair and proud fights and that drag me along to read the story. If you like adventure stories and animals, this book is a recommend.
