He’s a very nice man. He’s the wise guy is this story. • Homer Wells Orphan from St. Clouds. Because he was so many times adopted and returned to the orphanage, Wilbur Larch decided that he should stay at St. Clouds. He began to teach Homer Wells medical science. Title (explain) The Cider House Rules are rules written on a piece of paper which hangs in the cider house. Because the people who sleep there cannot read what’s on it, they don’t follow up the rules. Homer Wells can read them and tells the other ones what’s on it. The rules aren’t really that important and someone of the guys says: “These rules ain’t for us”. The same says dr. Larch about st. Clouds and his rules. No one from the outside world rules st. Clouds. It is dr. Larch who makes it clear over there. It is his rule that he performs abortions to women who want to. Setting (place, time) Place – Maine Time – Early in the twentieth century. Summary Wilbur Larch is director of St. Clouds, an orphanage in Maine and he chose a long time ago that he also performs abortions for women who doesn’t want to have the baby. He says about it: “I give them what they want; an orphan or an abortion.” Homer Wells is orphan at St. Clouds. Many time he is adopted, but every time he is returned of he came back himself. Larch decided that Homer should stay at St. Clouds, that it’s his home. But Larch wants everybody to be of use at st. Clouds, so he begins to teach Homer medical science. Homer is like a son for him. Homer delivers children at St. Clouds, but he refuses to perform abortions, because he thinks the fetus already has a soul and that it’s cruel to kill it. In Ocean View lives the family Worthington. They run the apple orchards over there. Wallace and Olive’s son, Wally, has a relationship with Candy Kendall, only daughter of Ray Kendall, a lobsterman. Everyone knows they will soon marry, but a war is going to break out and Wally will be send away as a soldier. But first there’s another problem. Candy is unwantedly pregnant. She goes to St. Clouds with Wally and gets an abortion from dr. Larch. Homer becomes friends with Candy and Wally in the days that they’re at St. Clouds. Larch says to Homer that he should see the world and go with Wally and Candy. Homer leaves St. Clouds and goes with Wally and Candy to Ocean View. There he becomes a apple picker. Then Wally is send away to Burma. Candy and Homer get a secret relationship with each other. She falls in love with him after she heard Wally is shot down over Burma. Again, she becomes pregnant, but she wants to keep the baby. Because their relationship is secret, they go to St. Clouds. Candy gives birth to a boy named Angel at St. Clouds. When they go back to Ocean View, they say to everybody that the have adopted Angel from the orphanage. In the meantime, Wally has returned home. They saved him out of the jungle, although he’s paralysed. Wally and Candy marry with each other and together with Homer and Angel they’re a happy family. Wally also thinks Angel is adopted. When Angel is seventeen, he falls in love with Rose Rose, daughter of Mister Rose, the leader of the immigrant workers who work in the apple orchards and sleep in the cider house. Although, Rose Rose says Angel wouldn’t make a chance because of her father. Then Rose Rose gets pregnant, but not from Angel. Mister Rose is the father. Homer interferes en wants to call St. Clouds for an abortion, but he hears that dr. Larch died of an overdose from ether (he was addicted to it, but the overdose was an accident). Homer realises he is the only one who’s able to perform the abortion. He realises that you sometimes have to perform an abortion for the good. Rose Rose stabs her father a few days after the abortion and runs away. After Homer has performed the abortion, he realises he has to return to St. Clouds and follow up dr. Larch. It was the wish from dr. Larch. Homer gives Angel to Wally and Candy, who will be a perfect family together and he returns to his home, St. Clouds. Theme The book is about moral issues and rules. I have explained the rules with explaining the title. The moral issues are about the abortions, a love triangle and huge lies. Personal Opinion It’s a very extraordinary story to read. Some parts were very astonishing to read and I’ll certainly remember this story, because it’s not like most of the stories. I have also seen the movie and it’s a bit different from the book. I think I like the story from the movie more than the bookversion, because it’s more about Homer becoming the successor of dr. Larch. In the movie he is not so stupid as in the book. |
