Keuze:

Ik heb dit boek gelezen, omdat het een opdracht van mijn Engels leraar was.



Inhoud:

Ik vond het begin van het boek wel mooi, maar naarmate het einde kwam, begon ik het boek steeds saaier te vinden, omdat je eigenlijk een beetje kan voorspellen wat er zou gaan gebeuren. Maar al bij al was het wel de moeite waard het boek te lezen.



Samenvatting:

Frances Latimer (Fran) has been to a Stone Age camp for four weeks. When she is on her way home everything looks deserted. The way is blocked and two little kids tell her that it is illegal to go in. The kids told her she had to wear a mask becease of the germs. They also told her there was an unknown disease going on in London and other big cities. Nobody can go in and nobody can go out. Everyone who does do it, will get shot. The boy said there is a way to go in. There is a house where you can get trough. Fran dicides to do that, it’s her only chance. When she comes home, everything looks deserted. She has to go to the backdoor. When she is in, there’s a letter at the table to her. The letter sais that her father has just died. But the letter dates from a long time ago. Now has her mother also died. Fran tries to call a few people, but no-one anwers the phone. Then she tries to call her friend Harriet (Harry) and she does answer. She decides to go to Harry. When she arrives there she finds a very confused Harry. Harry hasn’t eat for days. That night they sleep in the basement. The next day Fran decides to take Harry to her place, because Fran knows there is food. The streets are deserted. Fran and Harry meet a group with all little kids. They are frighned and Harry is holding her knife. Then they meet Shahid Khan. His father has also died. Shahid and Fran have seen eachother before at school. Shahid goes with Fran and Harry, and he tells them they could all go to his brother. After they have been at Fran’s for a day, they start their way to Barnet, where Shahid’s brother lives. The next day they stay in a shop, where they find out that Shahid has got the virus. Harry wants to leave but Fran wants to take care of Shahid. Next day Harry was gone. She had left a letter that said that she had went to a party. Days past away. Fran started a diary. The fist day she didn’t leave the shop, but after a few days she had to. After a few days Shahid started to get better.

Shahid was almost better and they started their way to Shahid’s brother again. That night they arrived at his brother house. To late, much to late. The house was distroyed. There they stood: no house, no food, no nothing. And so they went to Cornwall, where the grandmother of Fran lives. They knew it would be a long trip and they had to pass trough the barricade. But they did, and no-one was there to stop them.



Onderzoek van de verhaaltechniek:

Het boek bestaat uit hoofdstukken met ieder een verhaal van een deel van een dag. Eerst zijn er twee verhaallijnen die elkaar dan tegenkomen. Het boek heeft een open einde, want je weet niet of ze inderdaad aankomen bij de oma van Frances.



Beoordeling:

Ik vond het een gemiddeld boek. Het boek gaat over iets wat ik bij fantasie zou plaatsen. Ik

vond het hoofdstuk waarin Shahid en Fran elkaar ontmoeten een mooi hoofdstuk, maar wel

heel moeilijk. Ik vond het niet zo spectaculair allemaal, want je kon op het gegeven moment wel voorspellen wat er zou gaan gebeuren. Ik denk dat dit soort boeken niet veel worden geschreven, dus dat maakt het wel speciaal. Ik heb verder niet veel waarde gehecht aan de inhoud van het boek, omdat het me niet aansprak. Ik denk dat ik mensen dit boek niet zo snel zou aanraden, omdat het een vrij moeilijk boek is en het gaat heel snel. Er worden bijna 2 maanden in 150 bladzijden verteld. Ik denk dat dit wel uitvoeriger had gekund.
