The most important person is Wang Lung, he is a farmer. He lives together with his old father. He has to marry the unknown O-lan, but he doesn’t love her. He always works very hard.
O-lan, before she married Wang Lung, she was a slave in a very rich house. She didn’t know Wang Lung until they married. She always works very hard in her house. She’s not very attrective, but she never slept with other men.
8. Where is the story located? Explain.
The main location is China. Especially in the place Kiangsu. The place is very important in this story.
9. In what period is the story set? Explain.
It was set in the 19th century. That’s very important because of the economic situation of China.
10. What is the most crucial passage/episode do you think? Explain.
When Wang Lung’s sons said not to sell the house and the land.
Their father has worked very hard for thet much of land, but his sons winked to eachother an decided not to keep the land.
11. Which character do you dislike? Explain.
I disliked the character of Lotus. She wasn’t fair to O-lan. She knew Wang Lung was married, and she still slept with him.
12. What’s your favourite character? Explain.
That’s O-lan. She didn’t knew the man witch she was going to marry with. When she was married her husband slept with other wives and she still didn’t sleep with other men.
13. Is it a good book to read? Explain.
I didn’t like it very well. The story was a bit boring. There were not many difficult words, because of the wordlist at the end of the book. I don’t want to recommend this book to other people because i didn’t enjoy reading it. I’ve red better books.
14. Write a summary of 200-300 words.
The story is about a poor farmer, Wang Lung. He lived in China. He was married with O-lan. O-lan was a good wife. Wang Lung worked on his land and he made a good fortune. O-lan gave birth to two sons and a daughter. After the birth of their daughter, Wang LLung moved from his land with his wife and children, because his fortune changed. That year there had been no rain in Wang Lung’s land, so he had no food. He went to the city. His daughter was only a baby when he went to the city. In the city he had no food, so he had nothing to feed his little daughter. His daughter didn’t die, but she was left with no reason in her mind, because she had been so near to the death. In the city Wang Lung must beg for money. For food he could go to the public kitchens. After a time Wang Lung went back to his own land, because in the city was no work and no food.
Back in his own land, Wang Lung bought some land with money that he had stolen from rich people. O-lan gave birth to twins. They had enough food now and everyone was happy. Wang Lung made a new good fortune. He bought more and more land and became a rich man. Wang Lung build more rooms in his house, and he let another woman, called Lotus, come to his house. O-lan was not happy about that, because she was the father of his sons. Wang Lung did not listen to this. So he lived with two women in his house.
When he died, Wang Lung let his sons promise that they never would sell his land and he let his servant promise to take care of his oldest daughter, his poor little fool.
