Summary of the book: The story begins on a fish market. FBI special agent Clarice Starling is leading a planed stick-up to capture Evelda Drumgo. Clarice has been a couple of times in contact with her and she warns the arrest team, because she is infected with the HIV-virus and will try to spit and all other ways to get them also infected. But it doesn’t come this far, Clarice was assisted by an Washington inspector, when the FBI cancelled the mission but Bolton the man who assists Starling wants to bring the mission to a good end, so his takes his gun and waits for the right moment, unfortunately the guards of Evelda saw that and they open fire, Starling didn’t want to kill anyone, but is was being killed or make sure she could get away in one piece, instead of a black body bag. She kills a couple of Evelda guards and then when all guards where killed, Evelda sat alone in a car, Clarice gave Evelda a direct order to step out of the vehicle, but is has got a baby in a body bag in front of her, Evelda asks at Clarice how she’s been doing and at the same moment she opens fire, Clarice was able to kill Evelda but Clarice was also hit in her arm. Because of the bloodbath Clarice was set off the case and she continued at the Hannibal case. Paul Kendler wants that Clarice will be suspended until there is a better look on the blood bath that was made by her in his eyes. By the bloodbath Clarice is the number on subject to rite about in the papers “death angel: Clarice starling, the FBI's killing machine”. But she refuses to quit and she started to work further on the Hannibal case. This happened all seven years later since Dr. Hannibal Lecter escaped from custody, seven years since FBI Special Agent Clarice Starling interviewed him in a maximum security hospital for the criminally insane. In the mean while Dr. Lecter created a fake identity: Dr. Fell. He stays in Florence created the vacancy at the Palazzo Capponi by removing the former curator--a simple process requiring a few seconds' work on the old man. But once the way was clear he won the job fairly, demonstrating to the Belle Arti Committee an extraordinary sight-translating in Italian and Latin from the Gothic black-letter manuscripts. He has found a peace here that he would preserve--he has killed hardly anybody, except his predecessor, during his residence in Florence. His appointment as translator and curator of the Capponi Library is a considerable prize to him. He has found his place where he can stay away from the public for a long, and knowing that they won’t reveal his true identity. But then there was Rinaldo Pazzi, chief-inspector in Florence. When they meet for the first time in the library Dr. Fell leaves a remarkable first impression. The reason why Pazzi approached Dr. Fell is because he was working on case, the man who was killed by Dr. Fell, the former curator. Pazzi was set of the Il Mostro case but that did not interest Dr. Lecter at all, but Pazzi's background did. Later Pazzi discovered the true identity of Dr. Fell, and he did some research, he saw that there was a reward set on Dr. Hannibal. So he contacted the FBI and gave him instructions. But they didn’t pay the money until they’ve got evidence that it is truly Dr. Hannibal. He contacted Romula Cjesku, she was several times captured by Piazzi, he gave her an order to get Hannibal’s finger print, and he bought a bracelet where you can see clearly someone’s finger print. But when Romula Cjesku looked Hannibal in his eyes see thought that see saw the devil, but Piazzi warned her that she wouldn’t get a finger print, she would spent the of the summer in jail, she asked her good friend Gnocco to do it, in the mean while Dr. Fell knew what they where trying to do. And he also knew that Piazzi was involved because he saw it when they where talking. Hannibal becomes suspiciously, and when Gnocco approaches Hannibal, Hannibal takes a knife and cutes artery in his right leg, but Gnocco was able to get a finger print and after he gives the bracelet to Piazzi he dies. After another phone call with the authorities in the United States Piazzi decides to search for another contact who wants to give more money for any information about Dr. Hannibal Lecter. He quest ends with Mason Verger he was the only man who ever survived the horrible acts of Dr. Hannibal. Piazzi sends the bracelet to Mason, and after research it was sure that it was Hannibal’s finger print. Mason was very interested and so he gave Pazzi the order to capture Dr. Hannibal alive. Piazzi gets help from Mason’s assassins. On a certain night Dr. Hannibal gives a presentation about the history of Florence for the first time as curator. At the end Piazzi enters the library and his helpers waiting outside. After the presentation Piazzi fakes a call, instead to call at his wife, he calls the assassins to say that they will leave the library soon. Off course Dr. Hannibal knew what’s going on and he shows some other slide, in the picture was a man, hanging on a rope, he was killed, and Hannibal says that Piazzi had the same destiny, hanging up outside the window with his stomach torn open. And before Piazzi realise what Hannibal says it was already too late. Dr. Lecter returns to the U.S. Because he is still interested in Clarice, during a night when she felt a sleep in her couch she dreamed that Hannibal was in her house. And when she woke up it was true, he putted the phone on the table with candles around it. Then the phone rang, it was Lecter, he gave orders and so he led her to a big mall, but Clarice was shadowed by Mason’s men. And she told it to Lecter but he was aware of it, when Lecter leaves the mall he’s kidnapped by Mason’s man. Clarice was still set off duty, but she calls the FBI and she demands a search warrant. But Mason was much smarter he waited until the cops left his house and then bring Hannibal to his house. Clarice didn’t believe the police report and she drove instantly to Mason’s house. When she entered the big house it seams that their wasn’t anybody at all, she went to the back, their was a small farm, Mason’s plan was to feed Hannibal to some kind of pigs. But Clarice was able to prevent this; she killed Mason’s servants and saves Hannibal, but when she was cutting the ropes she was shot in her arm by servant, but she doesn’t drop her weapon and shots the servant dead. But then Mason show’s up, he is so messed up that his sister needs to take care of him; he can’t do anything by himself. And his sister has enough of it Hannibal says to her you can kill him and say that I did it, she ran in to the house, in the lobby stands a big aquarium she picks out an eel and shoves it into Mason’s throat and he suffocates. After al of this Hannibal kidnapped Krendler, the man who putted Clarice off-duty and Hannibal wasn’t very happy about it. When they arrive at house of Clarice she’s already passed out and Paul is sits strangled in cellar. When she wakes up she sees that Lecter take care of her arm. He also prepared Paul for diner, he cuts of the top of his head and Paul has to eat his own brains, after when Clarice saw this she had to throw up. But Hannibal doesn’t look at Clarice he drives away with Paul and kills him. Then Lecter disappears who went to Buenos Aires. And for another 3 years Clarice heard nothing from him. Own opinion: It is a very good book, some time it is al little bit to boring, I also found it was a very difficult book. The language use by Dr. Hannibal Lecter is very difficult to understand; sometimes I didn’t know what I was reading. The story line of the book was very good and strong it creates a feeling that like if you are participating in the book. Everything is mentioned very well in to the smallest detail. But the book is not the same as the movie; I saw the movie in the cinema (twice) and in the book are participating a few more characters and some characters are different. Examples: In Book is Mason taken care by his sister in the film is he taken care by Cordell. The girl (Romula Cjesku) that is contacted by Piazzi doesn’t appear in the movie it is only Gnocco. The end in the book is a little bid different than the end in the movie. |
