Time and Place:
a. Where is the story set?
The setting of the story is mainly in Manhattan, New York. Most of the time in several night clubs, in the apartment of the main character (Jose) and in his working place at the New York Post. But sometimes just on the street or in the houses of other people. Sometimes the main character thinks about his childhood which he spent in other places.
b. When does the story takes place?
I think the story takes place in the 80’s or late 70’s because
the book was published in 1984, but the book could take place any time, from the 60’s because before that time there where no real night clubs like them descriped in the book. The time is not very important to the story.
c. How can you tell when the story takes place?
There are no real indications of when the story takes place, the writer only writes for example: yesterday, tomorrow and last year. So I can’t say exactly when the story took place.
d. How much time is covered in the story?
The time, covered in the book is I think about one or two weeks. Sometimes the writer tells you that a new day is starting but that is not very often. And the writer never says that he is skipping one or more days, so I think the story takes places in one or two weeks.
Structure:
a. Is the story build up chronologically?
The story is build up almost totally chonological. Sometimes the writer makes flashbacks but that are always short parts.
b. Does the author make use of flashbacks and/or flashforwards?
There are a few flashbacks in the story. Most of them are about that the main character is thinking about the time that his wife, Amanda, was still with him. Ath the end of the book there is a flashback in which the main character is thinking about the last days before his mother died, and when he was with her.
c. Analyse the opening of the book.
The is not really one big action in the book, the whole book describes the main character and his live. So I can’t really say if there is an introduction or not. But if I have to chose between an introction or not I would chose for no introduction because the strory starts when the main character is in a nightclub. There is no clear intorduction of all the persons in the story but the story just begins and the reader have to find out who is who and what they are doing.
Point of View:
The author uses the second person point of view (you). Actually the author is telling the reader what is happening in his life. For me this was the first time I read a book with this point of view, so it was very strange for me in the beginning.
Description Characteristics:
The main character, whose name is Jose I think and is called Coach by his friends. He is 24 years old and lives in New York. He also has 3 younger brothers. Some time ago Coach was a very happy man. He had everything he could have, a nice job, a wife, a lot of friends so no problems in his social life.
His troubles start when his wife Amanda left him, She suddenly calls from Paris that she will stay there for here career as a model. He also gets fired because he did not do his work very well. Than his real problems start.
Coach don’t really knows what he have to do now. He starts using drugs to feel better. One of his main problems is that does not talk with anyone about htat his wife left him. When some asks something about his wife the just says she is fine. Coach just can not accept the facts, this poem in the book describes what Coach feels like:
Facts are simple and facts are straight
Facts are lazy and facts are late
Facts all come with point of view
Facts don’t do what I want them to.
Some people want to help Coach with his problems, one of them is the sister of his friend Tad, Coach always goes to nightclubs with TAD. An other person who wants to help Coach is the former collegae Mergan
In the end of the book Coach says to himself that he has to start all over again he has to accept the facts as how they are. So Coach is learning form the things he did in his life and says to himself he has to live in another way.
Theme:
I think the message of the book is that you always have to accept the facts in the way they are, even if you don not want to be like how they are. And when for example you lost your wife or something you don’t have to hide it for other people, talk about it because that will help you to get positive again.
This book shows what will happen if you don’t want to accept the facts in the way they are. And that is not good. If you do it this way you will become more and more unhappy. If you just accept the facts in the way they are you can start to recover and start a new life.
Title:
a. Explanation of the title.
The title is describing New York because that is a big city and by night there are very many light in the city. This title is chosen because New York is the place where the main character lives. The name bright lights is chosen because a big part of his (the main character) live, he is in one of the night clubs in New York.
b. Other possible titles.
Facts don’t do what I want them to
I think this this is suitable because the in the book the main-character don’t want to know what is really happening. He doesn’t want to tell others about what is going on in his private live.
Impressive passages:
Vanaf bladzijde 109 tot en met bladzijde 112 wordt in een flashback beschreven hoe een van de laatste gesprekken tussen de hoofdpersoon en zijn moeder verliep. Enkele dagen later zou de moeder van de hoofdpersoon sterven.
Ik vond dit stuk erg mooi omdat in het gesprek allerlei dingen naar worden besproken die iemand normaal niet zo snel met zijn moeder zou bespreken. Maar nu maakt het niets meer uit omdat de moeder snel zal sterven vertelt de hoofdpersoon gewoon alles omdat hij gewoon wil dat zijn moeder nog even gelukkig kan zijn de laatste momenten van haar leven. Als hij niet alles zou vertellen zou zijn moeder met een ongelukkig gevoel dood gaan zoiets van “ik ken mijn zoon eigenlijk helemaal niet”. In de tekst om dit fragment heen wordt ook steeds meer duidelijk dat de hoofdpersoon zich begint te realiseren waar hij mee bezig is en dat, dat eigenlijk helemaal niet goed is.
Op bladzijde 90 tot en met 96 wordt beschreven dat de hoofdpersoon thuis is bij Megan een oud collega van zijn werk. Zijn wil hem graag helpen op uit zijn ongelukkige situatie te komen maar hij denk eigenlijk alleen maar aan iets anders, namelijk seks.
Dit fragment laat zien dat er wel degelijk mensen waren die probeerden om de hoofdpersoon uit zijn situatie te redden en hem wilden helpen om een nieuw leven op te bouwen, maar de hoofdpersoon zegt verziekt het op die momenten.
Personal opinion:
Voordat ik het boek ging lezen had ik nog niet echt een verwachting van het boek. Ik wilde eigenlijk en leuk boek kiezen om te lezen maar toen ik door de bibliotheek liep zag ik niet echt hele leuke boeken dus koos ik er maar gewoon eentje en dat werd dit boek.
Nu ik het boek gelezen heb, ben ik toch wel een beetje teleurgesteld ik het boek. Ik vond het niet echt spannend. Het is niet zo dat je als je het boek leest steeds meer te weten komt over iets en dat er uiteindelijk iets gebeurd wat erg verrassend is.
In het boek wordt een beetje beschreven hoe de hoofdpersoon zijn tijd doorbrengt en dat hij eerst steeds ongelukkiger wordt en uiteindelijk zegt tegen zichzelf dat hij zijn leven opnieuw moet beginnen. Dat vond ik wel een beetje jammer. Ik had toch minstens verwacht dat hij een nieuwe vrouw zou krijgen of dat hij weer samen kwam met zijn ex-vrouw.
Al met al zou ik dit boek niet aanraden aan mensen die een boek willen lezen met wat actie erin. Als iemand ervan houd om gewoon een verhaal over een persoon te lezen dan is het wel een leuk boek maar daar houd het ook mee op.
