1) Name the main characters of the book tell something about them. The main character of the book is Ruth. She’s a girl who’s fifteen. She is friendly person and she likes to help other people. She is afraid for these nightmares but whit the help from Ben she is strong. Ben is a friend of Ruth. He is a helping person and he really wants to help Ruth to find out the secret of her nightmares. 2) Write about the author of the book, his life, nationality etc. The author of the book is Ann Coburn. In 1991 she wrote her fist book for teenagers. That was called The Granite Beast and was an immediate success. It does not happen very often that a debut, a first novel, is recognized as belonging to the best of its genre. That’s what I found in the beginning of the book. I also look on the Internet but in all the pages for students I couldn’t find something. It’s true that I also can look in the library but when I thought to look it was Tuesday and the library in Nijeveen is only open at Monday and Thursday. So I’m really sorry for that. 3) Write a summary of the book you have read, at least 1 A4, in English. Ruth is a girl, whose fifteen years old and she lives with her mother in Cornwall. Eight months ago her father died by a heart attack. And her father’s wish was to move to Cornwall. They have just moved there and start the nightmares that Ruth got. When she got a nightmare, she wakes up middle of the night, screaming and laying on the floor. Ruth thinks that her dreams are a warning Maybe something terrible would happen. When Ruth walks by a garage, she notices that someone is staring at her. She’s afraid to look, but she sees that there is a boy, standing there in that garage. When she’s go the first day at school it was horrible. The teacher has said that some girl, named Tracey, be the guide of Ruth till she knows the way, but the first moment she was away. At home Ruth had a fight with her mother. Ruth goes away and tells herself, that she shouldn’t stop walking until her feet hurt. Ruth walked until she came by a ruin. There she met the boy from the garage. He had followed Ruth. His name is Ben. He knew that Ruth has terrible nightmares. But Ruth doesn’t want to listen to him because she doesn’t believe him. A few days later they meet again after more nightmares, and then Ruth believes him. They try to solve the problem together. First they start to read books about strange places and what happens with Ruth. They also go to different mysterious places, but Ruth doesn’t recognize any of them in her nightmares. On one evening they are reading books about ghosts and old legends. When Ruth read one she know that place. It seems to be one of her dreams. Under the village is a hole mine and tunnel system. With a school trip, Ruth goes inside the tunnels. She knows those tunnels, there are from hundred years old around. Ruth tries to warn everybody, but no one believes her and doesn’t listen to her. Ruth doesn’t want to go in these tunnels, but she goes because she wants to protect her classmates. Ben goes want also in the tunnels, but nobody is may to, so he goes after the group far away from them. When they are there, the walls begin to shake. The walls fall down and the doorway is locked. They make a rope of clothes to escape out the tunnel. There’s fight about who should climb first outside. The teacher has said that Ruth must go first to find the way out. She climbs with the rope to above and when she smell fresh air the other follow her and find the way out. Rescue workers rescue Ben who has followed the children. 4) Give your own opinion about the book, at least 50 words I really mean that it’s a difficult book to read. That’s the biggest problem when I read it. But also the book is not my interest. I don’t like these books. But the story of this book is great for people that love it because it’s a logical story. I know that this book isn’t real is but my fantasy is good enough to understand this. The next time, when I must read a book for school, I hope I’ve got an easier book that I also like. |
