Writer's biography
Jerome David Salinger was born on January 1, 1919 in New York City. He earned average grades in grade school, but was dismissed from a prestigious prep school for failing grades. He graduated from Valley Forge Military Academy. This school was the model for The Catcher in the Rye's Pency Prep. In 1942, he was drafted into the army. He was a member of the Fourth Army Division that made D-Day famous. After WW2, he was hospitalised in Germany for psychiatric treatment. Today, Salinger supposedly lives in New Hampshire in a cottage by himself. He still refuses to be interviewed, but rumours say he may break his silence by allowing a story of his to be published after about 30 years.
Summary of the story
The story start's at the last night from Holden at Pencey, a Boarding School he is at. He has been kicked out of school because he didn't have good marks. It's almost Christmas and he supposed to go home in the vacation on Wednesday. He decides to go a few days earlier to New York, where his parents live, but he doesn't go home, because he doesn't want his parents to know he has been kicked out of school again. He checks in in a hotel and goes to the Ernie's, a night-club. He has been there before with his brother D.B. He dances the whole evening with a blond girl, but she's only interested in celebrities so he goes back to the hotel. At the hotel, the elevator-boy says that he's a pimp and that he can arrange him a five-dollar whore. He takes the deal and a few minutes later the whore, named Sunny, arrives at his room. He was excited because he thought that he could loose his virginity that night, but when she takes her sweater off, he realises that he doesn't feel sexy or something so he sends her away after he paid her. She want's ten dollar instead of the five dollar he had arranged with the elevator-boy.
He doesn't give her the ten-dollar and a few minutes later, she comes back with Maurice. He still doesn't pay and Maurice smacks him to punches in his face. Holden starts to cry. He pays now and they go away. The next morning he gives Sally, his formal girlfriend, a call and they go see a theatre-show at two 'o clock. They spend the whole afternoon together and after that they go ice-skating. Later, in a bar, he tells her he wants to go to the woods with her ant get a job so that they can merry each other. He was really serious. Sally didn't want to go and he called her a 'serious pain in the ass'. She ran away and he felt lonely. He phoned an old friend of him to get a drink together that night. They meet in some bar downtown. It isn't going well between them and after a while, and some drinks, Holden's friend, Carl Luce, leaves. Holden stays and he drinks a lot that night and he gets really drunk. When he's drunk, he calls Sally to apologise for his behaviour that afternoon. Then he decides to go and visit his little sister Phoebe and he goes to his parents' home. His parents aren't home so he talks to Phoebe a long time. Suddenly his parents come home and he the closet. When his parents are in bed, he leaves and goes to Mr. Antolini, a formal teacher from him who is a very good friend of him.
Holden tells him the whole story. He may sleep there that night, but when he wakes up at a moment, he sees mister Antolini feeling at him so he gets out of his house as soon as possible. He goes to the station and stays there for the rest of the night. He decides to run away and he writes Phoebe a letter. It says that he will run away to the west ad that she has to come to the park after school. When she comes she is carrying a suitcases whit her; she wants to go with him. He tells her it isn't possible and they got an argument. It causes him to let go of the idea and they make up. Holden comes home with Phoebe.
When he comes home he becomes sick and he goes to a sanatorium he tells his story to a therapist. And that's the story that we read today.
Setting and point of view
The novel takes place in New York in 1950. It is in December and Holden is kicked out of school because of his grades. He goes home but he doesn't want his parents to know that he is kicked out so he goes to a hotel. Holden tells the story and we see the things out his eyes. Which is very nice because you see what he is thinking.
Theme
The book is about a boy how tries to act like an adult but he can't stand the hypocrisy and the insincere witch he finds in the 'adults-world'. The theme of the book is how can you be honest and go your own way and at the same time by useful in the 'adults-world'. Holden is 16 and he drinks alcohol. When he's been kicked out of school he doesn't want his parents to know so he went in a hotel. When there's coming a girl he thinks he can lose his virginity but when she takes here close of he doesn't want any more. He maybe is too young for it. When he want's to walk away from home his little sisters talks him out of that and he is very glad when he's finally home. Holden is just a kid like we are, but he thinks that when he does things that older people are doing, he is older. The only thing that he forgets is that he isn't older, he is a kid and he stays a kid until he's old enough to go to the 'adult-world'. One person is 16 and an other person is 22. You go to the 'adult-world' when your ready for it and you can't fords it. He becomes depressed but at the end of the story he gets an idea of what he want to do with his life.
Genre
The novel belongs to the psychical-genre it's about a person how want to go to the 'adult-world'. He thinks a lot but there is nobody to talk to. He becomes a bit depressed. He also thinks al lot about his brother how died. In the novel you see the development of a young person how wants to grow up.

The Catcher in the Rye.
Holden wants to be the catcher in the rye. He wants to be there for children who have the same problem as he had. He wants to help children who will fall from their innocent 'kids-life' into the world of the adults. He doesn't want that they make the same fault as he made.
Character descriptions and character development
Holden Caulfield: He's a sixteen-year old boy and just got kicked out of another Boarding School: Pencey. His father is a lawyer and he's pretty rich. Holden has a pretty big mouth to other people and that brings him in danger sometimes. He once got punch from his roommate for calling him a moron all the time. He's afraid of people. He hates 'phonies', people who have an attitude. Holden liked his younger brother Allie, who died when Holden was a kid. He thinks al lot at him and he can't forget him. He also swears a lot, using words like 'goddam and damn'. He likes his sister Phoebe a lot and she is the one who tells him to come home and he does that. He also has a brother D.B he was a writer and Holden thought that that was fantastic, but now he makes movies and Holden hates movies. He also thinks that his parents have too little attention for him. Holden thinks a lot and he thinks negative about the society and he is finding his way in life. He lies a lot, but he wants to be honest.
The minor characters are Ward Stratlater (a roommate at Pencey). Robert Ackley (also a roommate at Pencey), Jane Callagher (one of Holden's friends from his past), Mr. Antolini (his old teacher), Sally Hayes (she used to be his girlfriend) and his brother D.B and his sister Phoebe.
Opdrachten 'lees- en leeservaringen'.
Opdracht 1: De kwaliteit van het verhaal
Ik vond het verhaal echt verschrikkelijk. Ik vond het een van de slechtste boeken die ik ooit gelezen heb. Iedereen schijnt het een leuk boek te vinden, omdat het over een jongen van onze leeftijd gaat, maar ik vond het echt helemaal nergens over gaan. Ik zaten ook helemaal geen dingen in die ik me goed voor kan stellen of die mij interesseren. Ik snap het zo en zo niet dat je je van school af laat schoppen vooral niet als je best goed kan leren, dat zou ik dus nooit in mij hoofd halen. En als het je dan toch gebeurt zal ik ook gewoon naar huis gaan. Verder vond ik het boek verschrikkelijk saai. Er gebeuren echt helemaal geen leuke dingen. Alles is voorspelbaar en het wordt verschrikkelijk verteld met al die stopwoorden die onderhand naar elke zin volgen. In de uittreksels stond dat hij 'tienertaal' gebruikte, nou ik zal ook best wel stopwoorden gebruiken, maar als het zo verschrikkelijk is zal ik direct wat gaan veranderen. Het leest gewoon echt niet en ik heb me er echt toe moeten zetten om het boek te lezen, wat me eigenlijk niet vaak gebeurt. Verder vond ik het thema ook een beetje vreemd, over hoe je volwassen wordt enz. Ik houd me daar echt niet mee bezig. Ik doe gewoon lekker wat ik zelf wil en ik word vanzelf wel een keer volwassen. Ik denk dat je dat gewoon niet kan dwingen. Om zoiets zal ik me dus echt niet druk maken. Je merkt van zelf toch wel dat je hoe ouder je wordt steeds volwassener wordt. Je gaat je toch vanzelf in andere dingen interesseren. Verder was er aan het boek ook helemaal niets bijzonders, er was geen leuke of aparte opbouw en er gebeurde ook helemaal niets spectaculers.
Het enige leuke aan het boek was dat het makkelijk te volgen was, maar daar houdt het dan ook echt mee op. Ik snap niet dat het boek zoveel publiciteit heeft gekregen en dat het zo populair is. Volgens mij moet je wel echt in een grote depressie zitten voordat je je in dit boek terug kan vinden. En als je dingen moet doen die Holden ook doet nou, volgens mij spoor je dan echt niet want ik heb wel betere dingen te doen dan te denken dat als ik maar dronken wordt dat ik dan volwassen word. Ik ben juist blij dat ik nog niet volwassen ben, je hoeft tenminste nergens aan te denken en je kan nog lekker gek doen zonder dat mensen er wat van zeggen. Ik snap Holden zijn probleem echt niet. Nou ik zal het boek echt afraden aan iedereen en ik snap niet dat we het op school lezen.
Opdracht 4: De belangrijkste handelingen en gedragingen in het verhaal
Ik kan me echt helemaal niets van de hoofdpersoon indenken en ik zal dat door enkele dingen belichten. Ten eerste: Holden wordt van school getrapt omdat hij onvoldoendes haalt. Hij kan echter wel goed leren en daarom snap ik echt niet dat hij onvoldoendes haalt. Ikzelf zal zoiets dus echt nooit laten gebeuren. Je zit op school omdat je zelf wat wilt leren en als je niks had willen leren dan had je naar je LTS moeten gaan waar ook Holden waarschijnlijk zonder te leren goede cijfers had gehaald. Daarna loopt hij weg van school, in de laatste dagen dat hij daar nog zit, ik weet nog steeds niet wat dat nou voor een nut had, maar dan gaat hij ook nog in een hotel zitten omdat hij niet wil dat zijn ouders het weten. Ik vind dit dus echt grote onzin, want als hij er zo bang voor is had hij wat moeten leren zodat hij gewoon op school had kunnen blijven of hij had gewoon nog even op school moeten blijven zodat hij gewoon op de normale dag thuis had kunnen komen. Ik vind Holden echt een lafbek die denkt dat hij heel stoer is, want hij loopt van school weg! Eigenlijk is hij een grote schijtert, want hij durft het niet eens tegen zijn ouders te vertellen! Dan gaat hij ook nog van de nutteloze dingen doen omdat hij denkt dat hij dan volwassen kan worden. Hij gaat veel drinken, waardoor hij zich stoer voelt omdat hij al op zijn zestiende alcohol krijgt. Nou boeiend, maar niet heus. Wat is er nou stoer aan om veel te drinken, niet dat ik zelf niet drink, maar je denkt toch echt niet dat je door drinken volwassen wordt, ik vind te veel drinken juist bij de jeugd horen, omdat de meeste volwassen wel wat voorzichtiger met drank zijn dan de jeugd. Op het eind laat hij zich nog door zijn kleine lieve zusje omlullen om toch maar te blijven en niet weg te lopen. Nou als je dan zo stoer bent om weg te lopen dan laat je je in ieder geval niet omlullen door je kleine zusje want dat vind ik dus echt een uiterste van laf zijn. Ik bedoel, hij voelt zich helemaal fantastisch dat hij heeft besloten om weg te lopen, hij vindt dan nog dat zijn kleine zusje niet mee kan. Hier kan ik dan nog wel inkomen, ik zal ook nooit mijn broertje ergens mee naar toe nemen, dan zit je de hele tijd met zo'n kind opgescheept. Als zijn zusje dan in de draaimolen zit bedenkt hij zich en gaat hij mee naar huis, nou dit vind ik dus echt zielig en niet kunnen. Ik vind Holden dus echt en verschrikkelijke sukkel en als ik hem in het echt zou kennen zal ik echt nooit met hem omgaan.
Opdracht 6: Wat heeft het verhaal met mij te maken
Dit verhaal heeft dus echt helemaal niets met mij te maken. Ik vind Holden een grote sukkel en ik kan echt niets van zijn dingen die hij doet begrijpen. Ik hoop in ieder geval dat ik nooit zo word als hij is want dat vind ik dus echt heel zielig. Ik maak me echt niet druk over hoe ik volwassen word, want dat komt vanzelf wel, iedereen wordt uiteindelijk toch een keer volwassen. Ik ben blij dat ik nog lekker niet volwassen ben en ik ga ook echt nog lekker lang van mijn jeugd genieten zonder al die zorgen om belastingen, rekeningen en kinderen. Ik zie vanzelf wel wanneer ik een keer volwassen word.
