Winston’s approach:

O’Brien told me I already knew what was in room 101! For Christ’s sake, how could I know what was in room 101 if I had never been there. He said it was the worst thing in the world and I was starting to believe it as the guard opened the door. He carried something made of wire. I couldn’t see what it was because O’Brien was standing in front of it, but I was sure it was something terrible. I felt my bowels turn into water. As O’Brien had stepped aside, I had a better view of the box. It was an oblong wire cage with a handle on top. Fixed to the front of it was something that looked like a fencing mask, with the concave side outwards. In it there were rats. And I can tell youn, if there is one thing I hate, it is rats. I used to have nightmares about them. Again I felt like using the bathroom, but this time I wasn’t sure whether I was able to hold it. Me knees were shaking like an earthquake 16 on the scale of Richter. I thought I was going to faint. The meaning of the mask-like attachment became clear to me now: I was going to experience something far worse than death.
