A. Samenvatting
Jack Stanton is the governor of a state in the South of the USA. He wants to run for president. First he will have to win the primary elections, to become the Democrat candidate.
He hires a lot of people to help him win the election. They make commercials, speeches, organize press conferences. Henry Burton is one of them. Jack Stanton is a warm and honest man, or so it seems. But when the press find out he's been arrested because of an anti Vietnam demonstration, people start digging in his past. They find out that he has had an affair with his wife's hairdresser, Cashmere McLeod. First no one believes the woman, but when she says she's got tapes, everyone gets scared. Susan, Jack's wife is angry with him, but she stays. The tapes appear to be false, but Stanton's reputation is ruined. Things get even more hectic when a friend of the Stantons says to Henry his daughter is carrying Jack's baby. First Henry only tells the governor, who decides to give blood, for a test to prove he's not the father. Henry believes Jack's telling the truth. When Susan finds out she's furious with Henry for not telling her. They have a one-night-stand, because Susan's needy. This doesn't ease the tension at all. Henry had a relationship with one of his colleagues and Susan is of course married. They've already hired someone, Libby Holden, to dig out their own pasts, before the opposition will. When Stanton's campaign seems dead, Libby and Henry try one last thing to win the election: they start digging in the past of Fred Picker, the other candidate. They find out Picker has been addicted to cocaine and was a homosexual in these days, while he was still married. Libby says she doesn't want Jack and Susan to use this stuff against Picker, but Susan's determined. Libby says she'll destroy Jack and Susan with all that she knows. She knows about 'the thing' between Susan and Henry, she knows that Jack's natural, unknown, father is Doctor Hastings who fiddled with the blood samples: he switched Jack's for someone else's, to make sure that Jack wouldn't appear to be the father. And that's how she knows that he must have had an affair with that girl. Otherwise he wouldn't have been tempted to change the samples. Then she runs away and shoots herself.
Scared because of all this, Henry decides to quit, but Stanton wants him to do one last thing: they go to Fred Picker and confront him with his past. Jack has already decided to give up the campaign the next day. Fred makes him undo that decision: he'll quit, because his past will keep following him. He thinks Jack should run for president. Jack really wants to, but wishes one thing, and so does Susan: Henry has to be on board…
You don't really get an answer, but I presume he's staying with the Stantons.
D. Verwerkingsopdracht
Verwerkingsopdracht: vergelijken van boek en film (Primary Colors 1998 met John Travolta als Jack Stanton, Emma Thompson als Susan Stanton en Adrian Lester als Henry Burton)
In het boek is de relatie die Henry heeft met zijn collega Daisy Mae veel meer duidelijk aanwezig. In de film is dat helemaal niet het geval. Je ziet hen een paar keer in bed liggen, maar verder wordt er niets over verteld. Ook is in de film de one-night-stand tussen Susan en Henry geschrapt uit de film, al men van plan was deze scène eerst wel op te nemen in de film. Critici vonden het echter verwarrend dat Henry Burton zowel met Daisy als met Susan het bed induikt en na de eerste test is de scène geschrapt.
Sommige dingen worden gewoon weggelaten, zoals het bezoek aan Los Angeles, waar Stanton werd teleurgesteld doordat niemand hem daar kende. In New York is er in het boek sprake van een lege zaal, terwijl men hem in de film uitgejouwd laat worden door een enorme menigte mensen.
Er is ook iets toegevoegd, dat niet in het boek stond. In de film heeft Henry namelijk een vriendin die het uitmaakt met hem als hij voor Stanton werken gaat. Zij is in de film degene die ontdekt dat Stanton vroeger gearresteerd is vanwege een anti- Vietnam demonstratie.
Het einde van de film is iets anders dan in het boek: in het boek is het onduidelijk of henry wel blijft werken voor Jack en Susan. In de film is de laatste scène echter dat Jack en Susan dansen op het feest ter ere van de overwinning; hij is president geworden. Henry staat vanaf de zijkant toe te kijken.
Als laatste viel het op dat in de film benadrukt wordt dat het gaat om de Clintons, in het boek zijn er wel dingen waarvan je denkt: hee, dat komt me bekend voor, maar in de film hebben de acteurs echt de opdracht gekregen Bill en Hillary na te doen.
