I.Componist :


a) De Dire Straits wordt in 1977 opgericht door Mark, zanger/gitarist, David Knopfler, gitarist en John Illsley de bassist. Al gauw komt Pick Withers, de drummer, erbij. Het debuut van de Dire Straits is op een punkfestival. Hier gebruiken ze nog een andere naam, één van een vorige groep van Mark Knopfler, want ze hebben er nog geen. Het idee voor de naam kwam van een vriend, dit omdat ze het moeilijk hadden op financieel vlak. Vanaf hun tweede optreden gebruiken ze de naam. Na heel wat moeite hebben ze wat geld bijeen om een demo op te nemen. Deze komt in de handen van DJ Charlie Gillet, hij is DJ bij een radio. Vanaf dan staat de telefoon bij de Dire Straits niet meer stil, ze krijgen verschillende aanbiedingen. Ze besluiten in zee te gaan met Phonogram. In 1978 nemen ze hun debuutalbum op, getiteld Dire Straits, dit met Sultans of Swing als eerste single. Maar het wordtraar maar waar eerst in het buitenland een hit. Zo komt het dat ze al snel door Europa gaan toeren, dan pas begint het in thuisland, Engeland, ook te kriebelen. En zelfs in Amerika begint het, maar voor ze erheen gaan, nemen ze eerst hun tweede cd ’’Communique’’ op, dit in 1979. Nu gaan ze op tournee door Amerika en Europa, maar ze merken dat als ze zo doorgaan, dat het rap zal gedaan zijn met de Dire Straits. Want je kan tijdens een concert toch niet alleen liedjes van drie minuten spelen. Dus besluiten ze het met hun derde cd over een andere boeg te gooien. In 1980 gaan ze naar New York om hun derde cd ‘‘Making movies’’ op te nemen, maar tijdens deze opnamen krijgen de broertjes Knopfler ruzie en gaat David weg. Dus moeten ze verder als trio. Door nieuwe en langere liedjes worden nieuwe muzikanten aangetrokken, Hal Lindes (gitarist ter vervanging van David) en Alan Clark (op het keyboard). In 1982 duiken ze weer de studio’s in en komen met een nieuw album naar buiten ‘Love over Gold’. Op het album staan slechts vijf nummers, er is er een afgevallen ‘Private Dancer’, waar Tina Turner later een hit mee scoort. Na de opnamen van dit album verlaat drummer Pick Withers de band en wordt vervangen door Terry Williams. Tegen deze tijd gaan ze weer op tour en wie ze met vroeger, het kleine kwartet vergelijkt, ziet nu een groots opgezette rockformatie. In 1983 - ’84 werkt Mark Knopfler aan een aantal films, Local Hero, Comfort and joy en Cal. Voor deze twee laatste is hij gaan samenwerken met Guy Fletcher. Hij wordt de zesde en laatste Dire Strait-er.

c) De Dire Straits hebben historisch veel te betekenen, vooral in hun prille begin. Toen waren ze het grote verschil in muziekstijl tussen al het punkgeweld. Zij waren een verandering, op muzikaal vlak, in die tijd. Ze waren een oase van rust.

f) Inhoud


De tekst gaat over de oorlog en over wat er is de oorlog gebeurd. Het gaat over vriendschappen die de oorlog maakt, over de geforceerde vriendschappen gevormd door de oorlog.


g) Stijl


- muzikale kenmerken: instrumenten: 2 gitaristen, 1 drummer, 2 keyboards en 1 bassist.


- Er zijn geen muzikale invloeden, ze waren juist de enigste die een ander muziekgenre gebruikten in een tijd van punkmuziek.


- Het was de enigste muziek die niet tot de stijlperiode behoorde. De stijl was toen punk. En de Dire Straits was de enigste groep, die succes had, in die tijd met andere muziek te maken.









































III.Beluistering en bespreking


a) Vanaf de derde beluistering begin je meer op de muziek en de tekst te luisteren. Je begint je ook beelden bij de woorden voor te stellen.





b) Prachtige uitvoering, je merkt echt de sfeer die men ‘probeert’ op te wekken. Ik raak helemaal in de ban van de muziek. Als ik het hoor probeer ik zo snel mogelijk alles neer te leggen om toch maar goed te kunnen luisteren.





c) Hetgeen mij het meest getroffen heeft is de tekst. Het is eigelijk een droevige tekst. Het gaat over oorlog en over wat er gebeurt tijdens oorlog. Mensen die sterven en welke miserie er tijdens oorlog ontstaat. Bij het beluisteren van deze muziek heb ik al meerdere keren hetgeen waarmee ik bezig was gestopt om toch maar te kunnen luisteren. Er is mij eigenlijk niets tegengevallen bij het beluisteren van de muziek, behalve dan dat er telkens iemand kwam storen. Maar dat ligt niet aan de muziek. Wat ik nog heel goed vond aan de muziek vond was dat het zeer swingend kan zijn, maar toch zeer droevig bedoelt zijn: vb. Sultans of Swing.





d) Ik ben het zeker eens met wat ik aan besprekingen over het stuk gelezen heb, want al wat ik heb gelezen was positief. En ik vind de muziek ook schitterend.





e) Ik zou heel graag meer beluisteren van deze groep. Daarom ben ik ook voor deze scriptie meerdere cd’s gaan lenen. Andere cd’s van de Dire Straits. Met name: Money for Nothing, Dire Straits, Communiqué, Making Movies en nog enkele andere. De beste vond ik toch Brothers in Arms en Money for Nothing (wat eigenlijk een soort verzamelalbum is van de beste nummers). Ik ben echt onder de indruk geraakt van deze muziek. Hetgeen mij het meest geboeid is dat de liedjes echt swingend kunnen zijn en andere dan weer zeer rustige love-songs kunnen zijn. Ik vind het knap hoe ze dat doen. Ik vind het spijtig dat ze nu geen optredens meer doen, ik zou er graag één meemaken. In de bijlage zal ik de teksten van de liedjes die ik het beste vond bijvoegen.


















































IV.Besluit


Ik vond het maken van deze scriptie zeker een nuttige bezigheid, op deze manier heb ik muziek leren kennen die mij voordien compleet vreemd was. Over Brothers in Arms mijn oordeel te geven zal niet moeilijk zijn. Het is gewoon schitterend. Ik vind niets negatief terug in het werk en ik ben blij dat ik deze muziek heb leren kennen. Ik heb Brothers in Arms gekozen omdat het een nummer was dat ik vlak voor de opgave van het werk op de radio hoorde. En ik vond het toen zeer goed. Daarom heb ik voor deze scriptie meerdere cd’s van Dire Straits gaan halen. En ik ben de muziek gaan appreciëren en nu ben ik zelf ook een Dire Straits ‘fan’.
