The book I am going to tell something about is I know why the caged bird sings by Maya Angelou.
I know why the caged bird sings is written in 1970 and has become a bestseller. In 1998 it was published, by Wolters- Noordhoff BV Groningen, in the series Blackbirds 1998. This is also the book I have.
The book is dedicated to “Guy Johnson and all the strong Black Birds of promise, who defy the odds and gods and sing their song.”
Abbey Lincoln Roach named the book.
The editor is Robbert Loomis at Random House.
Some things about the author.
Maya Angelou’s real name is Marguerita Johnson, the main character of the book. She is known most of her autobiographical books, like I know why the caged bird sings, 1970, Gather together in my name, 1974, Singin’ and swingin’ and gettin’ merry like Christmas, 1976, and The heart of a woman, 1981.
These books all tell her story in a different version; living and growing up in Arkansas, being raped by her stepfather when she was eight, bearing at her sixteenth, of her work as an actress, as a school administrator in Africa and as a poet. Her best- selling autobiographies have won her reputation of being a telling commentator on black American culture. She is also noticed for her varied and international involvement in the arts. Her theatrical career began when she appeared in Porgy and Bess in an international tour sponsored by the US Senate Department, 1954- 1955. She also performed at Broadway. She wrote and produced four television documentaries and produced a couple of musicals.
In the sixties, at the request of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, she became the northern co-ordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
Her work is widely praised for the way in which it celebrates in the black experience the capacity not merely to survive but grow and to triumph over adversity as well. This theme is also echoed in her poetry.
Title- explanation.
The title means that she knows, Maya, why the black stand up for their rights and let themselves be heard ( and sing their song) and live their lives the way they want it to. With no discrimination and believe in themselves.
Motto.
The motto, that stands in the front of the book, is:
What you looking at me for?
I didn’t come to stay.
You recognise this motto in the book by the way the whites think about the blacks and threat them: like garbage, that ain’t going to last.
Summary.
The story is about the life of Marguerite Johnson, otherwise known as Maya Angelou. The story begins when she was three years old and was put on the train from Long Beach, California to Stamps, Arkansas, together with her brother Bailey, who was four years old. They were send to their grandmother, because their parents got divorced and their mother nor their father could/ wanted to take care of them. They stayed in Stamps with their grandmother, who they called Momma, and their cripple uncle Willie, until Marguerite and Bailey were eight and nine years old. Then their father came to pick them up and brought them to their mother’s house in St. Louis, to live with her. There Marguerite was raped by her mother’s boyfriend, Mr. Freeman. After that she refuges to speak for several years. A few weeks after the rape, Bailey and Marguerite were send back to Stamps to live with their grandmother again. There she learns to speak again, thanks to her dear friend Louise, and she continues her life. Then on one day Marguerite gets a terrible toothache and she and Momma went to the dentist. But because they were black, the dentist wouldn’t help them. So they went to a black dentist and he did help then. A few days later Momma took Marguerite to her father’s home in Los Angeles. A few months later Bailey joined them in San Francisco, were their mother had moved after Mr. Freeman’s arrest. In that period Marguerite began to discover how unfair the discrimination of the black was. She even dropped out of school and lived in a junkyard for a month, but then she decided to take on white supremacy head- on. The book ends with Marguerite’s search for freedom: thinking she might be lesbian she got pregnant to prove she was not. After a normal pregnancy and a short labour, her son, Guy Johnson, was born.
Characteristics.
The lead figure in the book is Marguerite Johnson; the reader sees everything through her eyes. She is a black female and afraid of the world, because of all her bad experiences with life. The most important person in the book after Marguerite is Bailey, her brother. He is one year older then she is and always protects her.
The other characters are Marguerite’s grandmother Sister Henderson, who she calls Momma and Uncle Willie, Marguerite’s cripple uncle.
In a small part of the book her real father and mother play a roll, but not a very big one.
Structure.
The book counts 239 pages and has 36 chapters. The chapters are numbered, but without titles. The book is dedicated to Guy Johnson.
There are no flash- backs or flash- forwards in the book and the book is easy to understand. If you read 30 pages an hour, you can read the book in eight hours.
The book is written in a vision- avec; the reader nor the writer knows how it ends.
Genre.
The genre of the book is sadness and also a bit psysological.
Subject matter.
The subject matter of the book is racism and discrimination of the black in Arkansas.
Idea.
The idea of the writer is that racism is a bad and unnecessary thing, what shouldn’t be allowed and should be forbidden.
The motives.
The motives of the book are the pain and hurt discrimination brings with it.
Time.
The book plays around the early twenties and thirties.
The telling time is shorter then the told time.
The story is not told on a chronological base.
Room.
Most happenings take place in Arkansas, in the Store from Momma. Also a few in St. Louis and San Francisco.

Deel 2. Persoonlijke tekstbeleving.
Ik zou het boek ‘ I know why the caged bird sings’ niet aanbevelen. Er worden best wel veel moeilijke woorden gebruikt en de gebeurtenissen zijn saai en onlogisch. De gebeurtenissen zijn erg langdradig beschreven en zodoende saai om te lezen. Misschien heeft het er ook mee te maken, dat het boek in het Engels is geschreven. Nu leest het Engels inderdaad wel wat moeilijker dan het Nederlands, maar ik heb al wel vaker Engelse boeken gelezen en veel problemen had ik daar niet mee. Wat ook heel irritant was, was dat het boek in dialect is geschreven en vaak werden de werkwoordsvormen weggelaten, zodat het net leek alsof je Engels zat te lezen dat geschreven was door een drie jaar oud kind. Dat bemoeilijkte het lezen en maakte ook dat ik het steeds weer uitstelde om het boek te pakken en verder te lezen. Niet echt een aanrader van een boek dus. Al spraken de problemen in het boek mij wel aan.
Het boek gaat vooral over discriminatie en racisme.. Je ziet dit allemaal door de ogen van Marguerite Johnson, de hoofdpersoon van het boek. Op jonge leeftijd werd zij al geconfronteerd met de discriminatie van de zwarten in Arkansas.
Ik kan me aan de ene kant wel en aan de andere kant niet in haar situatie verplaatsen/
Juist wel, omdat ze nog zo jong en puur en onwetend is en overal goed in ziet en dan vervolgens hard met beide benen, uit de zevende hemel getrokken, weer op de grond wordt geplaatst waar ze hoort; ‘een zwart meisje tussen de rest van het gespuis’.
Aan de andere kant juist niet, want ik kan me niet voorstellen wat het is om gediscrimineerd te worden, alleen omdat je een andere huidskleur hebt en gebukt te gaan onder dat oneerlijke feit.
Ik vind het ook wel heel erg laag bij de grond om iemand op basis van hoe hij eruit ziet te veroordelen of in een hokje te stoppen.
Zodoende heb ik ook de meeste sympathie voor Marguerite en ook voor Bailey; hij maakt ook een hele moeilijke tijd door. De minste sympathie heb ik voor Mr. Freeman. Hij moet gewoon met z’n poten van een 8 jaar oud meisje afblijven. Dat soort mensen maken dat ik mij schaam omdat ik blank ben.
Ik snap wel dat Marguerite door een hel heengaat, kijkende naar alles wat ze heeft meegemaakt.
Daarom ben ik ook wel blij met het slot van het boek; Marguerite krijgt een kind en vind eindelijk innerlijke rust. Ik zou het slot ook niet anders willen schrijven.
Op Marguerite’s levensverhaal afgaand, is de titel ook heel erg gepast; Ik weet waarom gekooide vogels zingen; ze willen dat iedereen hun lied, hun gezang hoort, zodat misschien er wel iemand is die hun gezang zo mooi vind en hun vrijlaat.
Het verhaal had zo in het echt kunnen gebeuren; een realistisch verhaal dus.
Eigenlijk is alles in het boek wel echt beschreven, alleen sommige dingen worden teveel aangedikt, zoals de kreupele oom Willie van Marguerite en Bailey. Al doet die kreupele oom Willie me wel aan een goede vriend, Mario, van mij denken. Willie doet net alsof hij niet kreupel is; hij wil het niet toegeven; niet tegenover zichzelf en dus ook niet tegenover anderen. Mario is ook zo. Hij durft niet tegenover zichzelf en ook niet tegenover anderen toe te geven dat hij eigenlijk homoseksueel is. En als hij dat wel doet, voelt hij zich zo alleen en ellendig en wil zo graag weer normaal zijn, dat hij toch weer net doet alsof hij hetero is. In dat opzicht lijkt hij op oom Willie.
Bij dit verhaal heb ik een aantal passende spreekwoorden gevonden:
Het leven gaat niet altijd over rozen, ieder huisje heeft z’n kruisje en pompen of verzuipen.
Pompen of verzuipen past wel goed bij het onderwerp van het verhaal:
discriminatie en iedereen moet hetzelfde zijn; Je moet volgens bepaalde maatstaven leven, anders val je buiten de boot en kan je niet overleven. Hier ben ik het wel mee eens, als je het over de gehele maatschappij hebt, zoals in dit boek het geval is. Je moet samen een geheel vormen om te kunnen overleven. Maar als je praat over een kleine groep of gemeente, ben ik het er niet mee eens.
Ik ben zelf altijd al excentriek geweest en heb nooit echt veel moeite gehad met wat andere mensen daarover denken. Daarom ligt het er maar net aan over wat voor schaal je het hebt.
Verder wil ik alleen nog kwijt dat ik een grote fout heb gemaakt om dit boek te kiezen voor mijn leesdossier en kan dit boek dus ook niet aan iemand anders aanbevelen. Helaas.
