About the author
Julian Barnes was born in Leicester (England) in 1946. He briefly considered a career in philosophy, but then decided to be an advocate. He actually never started a career in law, but worked as a lexicographer. ('dictionary writer') After that he went into journalism and at the age of forty he became a writer of fiction.
He wrote a series of thrillers under his pseudonym 'Dan Kavanagh'. Under his own name he wrote a couple of masterpieces like 'Flaubert's Parrot'.

Title explanation
Graham Hendrick is fascinated by Ann's past: her relationships with other men before she met him. Eventually his fascination becomes an obsessive jealousy about her affairs.
Summary
Graham Hendrick, a history teacher at London University, leads a boring life without any things that makes life attractive. Then he meets Ann at a party at Jack Lupton's place. He falls in love with her. He leaves his wife Barbara to live with Ann. After a while he goes to the cinema with his daughter Alice. He's surprised to see that Ann is committing adultery in the movie. Ann appears to have had a short career as an actress in British B-movies.
Graham is fascinated and tracks down All over London to see the movies with Ann in it. Gradually his fascination turns into an obsession. He goes to Jack for advice. Ann doesn't know what to do with Graham's fascination and she also goes to Jack for advice. Graham then suspects that Jack who is a real womaniser has had an affair with Ann as well. He studies all of Jack's novels and he finds a lot of 'toasts' about Ann. Jack always puts these 'toasts' and 'teases' in his novels. He recognises certain behaviours and other things that revered to Ann in persons. When these persons appear in the novel there is always talk of sex.
Graham thinks that they still have got a relationship. Then Graham meets Jack's wife Sue to be sure of his discoveries. One day he visits Jack. There he stabs him to death. His wife is worried about him because he didn't come home. She rings everybody. Eventually she goes to Jack's place. Graham ties her up and commits suicide.
Character description / development
Graham is an intellectual person that doesn't show his feelings a lot. Graham wasn't satisfied with his uneventful life. By meeting Ann everything changes. He starts to live again and enjoys life. After a while he is fascinated and later obsessed by the affairs of Ann with other men. He keeps asking her if she had also slept with a certain person from the movies where Ann was also playing in. It really pursues him. Then he finds out that his wife still got a relation with Jack. He is out of his mind by that and kills Jack and himself. Before his suicide he understands his situation. The 40 'boring' years where his best years. Now the offal (rubbish) has come out. By giving your life a meaning you just postpone that process. So his life had a meaning and now with Ann the offal have come out. He can't accept this happening to him and he finishes his life.
Setting
The stories especially takes place at Ann's apartment in London and at Jack's place. Besides these places also at the cinema, his classroom at London University and at a hotel in South-France, when they were on holiday. The story is about four or five years of Graham's life. Somewhere in the seventies or eighties I think, because then people were freer to do what they wanted as before. If you want to leave your wife for another woman it's not a 'shame'. People see it as something that can happen. The story took place because Graham found his life uneventful and that's why he falls in love with Ann, whom he meets at a party of Jack, and leaves his wife and daughter.
Point of view
The story is written in the 3rd person by an omniscient author. He doesn't gives you much emotions through the story and he gives you a description of Graham and Ann at the beginning of the book.
Theme
The theme of this story is committing adultery. Graham commits adultery by having an affair with Ann and Ann by having an affair with Jack during her relationship with Graham.
Genre
It's a psychological drama because you see Graham going down at his own thoughts about Ann's earlier relationships with other men. Graham is fascinated and later obsessed about it. And he goes down because he went out of his mind.

Opinion (dutch)
Uit een passage op blz. 45 blijkt dat hij geheel geobsedeerd is door Ann. Jack heeft namelijk hele rare gewoonten. Hij huilt als de planten dood gaan niet omdat hij het zo erg vindt voor die planten maar omdat Ann er zoveel tijd in heeft gestoken. Ook schrijft hij elke dag in een dagboek op wat ze aan heeft. Later op die dag gaat hij zich dan inbeelden of in gedachten aankleden zoals ze er 's ochtends uit zag. Verder heeft hij de gewoonte om de etensrestjes van haar op te eten. Hij vindt het een apart idee dat hij nu iets in z'n maag heeft dat zij eigenlijk hoort te hebben. Hij voelt zich zo dichter bij Ann. Graham voelt zich ook dichter bij haar als hij 's ochtends een toiletpapiertje vindt van haar dat ze 's nachts naast de prullenbak heeft gegooid. Als hij het erin gooit voelt hij zich sentimenteel. Deze vier gewoonten van Graham vond ik erg vreemd en zijn me daardoor opgevallen. Hij is blijkbaar niet gewoon gek van haar maar echt geobsedeerd.
Een andere passage die me is bijgebleven staat op blz. 127 en 128. Hierin begint Ann met een verhaal over een bordeel. In sommige bordelen doen ze net of sommige meisjes maagd zijn door zakjes kippenbloed en was te gebruiken. Zo denken de klanten dat ze maagd was. Toen ik dat las snapte ik totaal niet wat dat nou met het verhaal te maken had. Na twee bladzijden bleek dat Ann dit gebruikt om een scherpe opmerking te maken. Omdat Graham zo 'geïnteresseerd' is met wie Ann allemaal de koffer in is gedoken, zegt ze dat ze dit ook wel eens zouden kunnen doen. "…., I could be your virgin, Graham. You'd like that, wouldn't you?" Wel een beetje een vreemde passage doordat het zo lang duurt voordat je snapt waarover het gaat en dan zo'n scherpe opmerking terwijl Ann helemaal niet zo scherp is.
Ik snap niet waarom Graham zo moeilijk doet over Anns verleden met andere mannen. Je kan iemand dat toch niet kwalijk nemen dat ze vroeger anders was. Ik denk dat daar namelijk de relatie kapot ging doordat het vertrouwen van Grahams kant weg is. Dat uiteindelijk blijkt dat Ann nog steeds een affaire heeft met Jack is zijn vermoeden niet voor niets geweest. Ik snap best dat je dan kwaad bent en het misschien niet ziet zitten maar dan vermoord je zo'n man toch niet en gaat er zelf bij liggen? Wat heb je dan bereikt? Zelf schiet je er niets mee op. Je kan toch beter opnieuw beginnen of in zijn geval terug gaan naar de vrouw die wel van je houdt, Barbara. Op deze manier dupeert hij zijn dochtertje er ook mee. Is zo'n dochtertje het dan niet waard om te blijven leven.
Ik vind het wel een interessant verhaal omdat het iets mysterieus had. Graham had namelijk alleen een vermoeden en dan wil je wel weten of het klopt. Het verhaal blijft je zo wel boeien. Ook de manier waarop het verhaal geschreven is helpt hier aan mee, omdat je totaal niet weet welke richting het op gaat. Het is niet zo'n verhaal waar je van tevoren al kan zeggen wat er gaat gebeuren. Het enige nadeel van dit boek vind ik dat je soms niet echt begrijpt waar het over gaat. Het verhaal kan van het ene op het andere moment ergens anders over gaan zonder dat je het echt in de gaten had. Vaak springt de schrijvervan de ene op de andere alinea naar iets heel anders, waar je juist een nieuw hoofdstuk o.i.d. verwacht.
