Summary:

The book is about a girl named Anne. One day, when Anne came out of school, she met a boy named Adam. Adam has a disease called SCID. That means that Adam has no immune system and so he must live in a plastic cage that keeps off viruses and purifies the air. Anne goes and visit Adam many times and they really like each other. Finally they get a relationship.

Once, when Anne was visiting Adam, Adam asks her why she doesn’t go out with other boys. Anne took it in a bad part and thinks that she was dumped by Adam. Adam doesn’t mean it like that, he only doesn’t want to take away that part of fun because he can’t go out.

Anne doesn’t want to speak or see Adam anymore. Adam still often tries to ring her, but it was no use.

Anne gets a relationship with Tony to forget Adam and to teach him a lesson. But after some time, she discovered she loves Adam much more than Tony. Than she went to Adam’s house, but when she comes there, Adam’s mother says he’s in hospital because maybe Adam can be cured. Anne goes to Adam as soon as she can and than she makes it up with him. When she arrives in the hospital she is told that they’re not sure that Adam will survive. It’s taking a chance. Adam wants to take the chance and he steps out of his bubble. For the first time Adam touches his mother and Anne.

But something goes wrong, two weeks after Christmas Adam dies…

Personal valuation:

I like the story very much, because you can easily understand the thoughts and feelings of the characters in this book. But the book is also very moving, because Adam dies. I didn’t expected such an end of the book (I thought Adam would stay alive).

There were a lot of difficult words in the book but a I learned a lot from them.

Favourite character:

My favourite character is Anne, because it doesn’t matter to her that Adam lives in a bubble. She just loves him because of what he is and I think not many people look at that point.

Favourite scene:

My favourite scene was the day of Adam’s operation. He sent Anne a package with a balloon inside. Anne has just opened the door and there’s the mailman:

‘Thanks,’ I said, trying to take the box which he refused to release.

‘Sighnear,’ he said (this man spook in a funny way).

I signed the clipboard he was waving at me and rushed back into the house. The second I opened the box flaps, up popped an shiny red, metallic, gas-filled balloon, which floated straight up to the ceiling.

It had a jolly kind of face printed on it in black. Attached to its long tail was a card, bearing the typed message: ‘The balloon’s finally gone up! Here’s hoping we can soon burst my bubble. All of my love, Adam.’

This is my favourite scene, because the balloon looks like the bubble where Adam lives in and the bursting of the balloon is the same as coming out of his bubble. That’s Adam’s biggest wish. I think that’s very moving.
